What is a Proper Pre-workout Meal?
What do you usually eat before your morning workout? And if your answer is “nothing,” is it because you don’t have time? Or because you don’t know what to eat?
It’s important to eat a little something before a workout so that your body can work. If you’re going to get out of bed or off the couch, you may as well give your 100% to that 30-60 minutes. Giving your body a little fuel will make that time the most effective it can be. Just make sure that it’s just enough to keep you moving, but not too much that you feel sluggish.
Here are some quick and easy pre-morning workout meals that give you no excuses to go to the gym on an empty stomach.
Banana and Greek Yogurt
Eat one or two bananas before a workout, depending on your appetite. They will provide energy, sustain your blood sugar, prevent muscle cramps, and enhance your mood. Add some greek yogurt for a good source of lean protein.
This is good meal to have that can be dressed up so many different ways. Oatmeal is a whole grain and a wonderful complex carbohydrate, meaning it will be slowly digested and will provide long lasting energy while you are burning calories. It allows sugar to slowly be released into your bloodstream. If you want to avoid cooking them in the morning, go for “overnight oats.”
Here is my all time favorite overnight oats recipe:
- 1/3 cup oatmeal
- 1 cup almond milk or soy milk
- almond butter
- 1 green apple, chopped
Instructions: Soak the oatmeal and your choice of milk in a bowl overnight. The oatmeal will be ready to go in the morning, just add the almond butter and apple.
You can pack so much nutrients in a smoothie and tailor fit it to your taste buds. Buying a blender is one of the best investments I’ve made. Fruits include carbohydrates that give you a fast burst of energy. Prepare a bag of fruit (and greens, anyone?) at night, freeze it, and blend in the morning. Just add water or your choice of milk (I prefer almond milk.) Also feel free to blend oats in, as well, for more stamina.
